JAPAN: Extremely rare megamouth shark caught

This rare megamouth shark was caught in fishing nets five kilometres from Owase Port in Mie Prefecture and was around five metres in length.

It weighed around 1000 kilos (2200 pounds) and was bought by a Japanese fish monger.



Megamouth sharks have been reported to swim between depths of 130 and 170 metres under water during the day, ascending to between 10 and 30 metres during the night.

MEGAMOUTH SHARK: Rare catch captured off Japan

An huge megamouth shark of around  13 foot or 4.4 meters in length was captured off  the fishing port of Yui Shimizu, in Shizuoka City, Japan.

This strange and rare shark is known for a huge mouth and only 53 shark in all world are fished; this is 17th cases in Japan.

The megamouth shark (Megachasma pelagios) is one of the most mysterious and least understood of all the sharks. It was of these sharks was recorded in late 1976 and is so different from other shark lineages that it has been placed in its own family: Megachasmidae.

This huge shark, believed to reach a maximum length of 17-18 feet, resides mostly at great depths, but rises toward the surface at night to feed.

In the 1976 the first megamouth ever was discovered off Hawaii when it got stuck on a sea anchor of a US Navy ship.

These big mystery sharks have been known to grow up to 5.4 metre - 18 feet long, weigh over 450 kg -1000 lbs and seems they feed on smaller prey with it's giant mouth and tiny hooked teeth.
